Yes, there is a way to open a password protected MS Excel file without
installing any software.

This tool does the trick, and the program is just an ordinary Excel
file that contains a simple program, rather than software so there's
nothing to be installed:

http://www.intertek.org.uk/downloads/excel.html

Alternatively, you can just send the file by email and they will open
it for you the same day - data recovery is a legitimate IT service:

Please do not use these facilities to open any file unless you are
authorised to do so.

I'm here to help if you have any problems.

Best wishes,

or you can do it yourself...just copy all the cells on the sheet, open a
new workbook and paste them into a new sheet. works best if you select
all the cells by clicking the blank square in the upper left corner of
the worksheet (where the top of the row numbers intersect with the left
side of the column letters). insert on the new sheet the same way, and
all your cell formatting and row/column sizes should come over
correctly.

i've only tried this with simple files so i'm not sure what, if any
problems you may have with files with multiple work sheets or lots of
linked cells, but it's worth a try.

good luck,

i have code to uprotect sheets, but these are password locked files
that somone who has since left that i need to get open.

I know there is a way you can do this - i used to have an access db
that would do it, but am not authorised to spend any money on it...

If you can't open the workbook, none of the suggestions so far will work.
You will probably have to use a commercial cracker program like

You will need a proper tool to solve this. Try searching Google for
free password recovery tools.

This one is only about $5 and you can download a free demo:

http://www.intertek.org.uk/downloads/excel.html

If all else fails, just send me the file and I'll open it for you when
I have time, provided that you are fully authorised to access the file
and can give me written permission.

Mark.
