Hi Xperts,

The hard disk from my main computer has to be reset. I want to save some
of the stuff from it, so I hung the Hard disk in another PC.
This works OK, except for the files that I want to save from my main
'documents and settings'-part (the one that goes under my name), because
I have a password attached to this.

Is there a way to work around this? So, that I can copy the files from
my main hard disk to another one?
Or is there a reference to this problem somewhere on the Internet?

Thank you in advance.

Best,

Carlo

All you need to do is take ownership of the folders and replace permissions. It has nothing to do with a password.

I assume that you have put the hard disk in another PC that has Windows XP on it.

Open a Windows Explorer window, which list all the folders and files from your old disk.

Right click on the Documents and Settings folder from your old hard drive, and choose properties.

Click the Security Tab and then click the Advanced button at the bottom.

Click the Owner tab and choose your current Administrator login name from the PC you are currently logged in with.

Check the box at the bottom to "Replace owner on subcontainers and objects" and then click "APPLY"

After that then click the Permissions tab and check the "Permission Entries" in the Window.

Make sure the same local Administrator account that you have logged in with on the PC is listed.

If it is not then click "Add" and type in the account. Alternatively, you can add the "Everyone" Full Control.

Make sure you check the box at the bottom to "Replace permission entries on all child objects..."

Then click Apply and OK.

You will then be able to access your data in your old Document and Settings\....My Documents folder.

Hi Darren,

it worked great!
one addition: I had to start in Safe mode, and then use the
Administrator, otherwise I couldn't see the 'security tab'.

Thanks a bunch,

Carlo
