Words 2000 - Can't restart numbering

I do hope someone can shed some lime light to this situation I'm facing.

I've some paragraphs that I'm trying to bullet with numbers. However, when I
tried to restart the numbering it refuses to do so. It just stays at a random
number which I copy and pasted the paragraph from another document. I have
tried the format copier which only rearranged the numbers according to the
last number it was listed from.

When I tried to change it back to Normal, my fonts changed to some other
style which I did not set it to and the numbers dissapeared.

Is it that my document is corrupted? I doubt so as I'm still going at 149
pages and way below the 32MB mark per doc.

Kindly advice

Sounds like you've run foul of using direct number formatting. It's possible
you have ended up with a document corruption as well (especially if you have
built up a lot of "List Templates" while trying to fix this), so you may
want to start clean before you go any further (copy all except the last
paragraph mark to a fresh document).

The safest way of applying numbering is using styles. If you have single
level numbering, you might find the built-in style List Number will do the
job, but usually it is best to modify the numbering using the Outline
numbering tab - in Word 97/2000 this gives you more control over the format,
and it also allows you to set a higher level style to restart the numbering
automatically.
