I have recently upgraded to Office 2003. Now I am having difficult time in
converting my old WordPerfect files, if need them, into Word. They open with
some very strange symbols (fraction numbers), where as same files opnned well
in the Word 2000. What can I change?

Some special characters in Word Perfect documents don't convert well to
Word. There is a macro to assist with this described at
http://www.columbia.edu/~em36/wpdos/wptoword.html#macroword and can be found
at http://www.columbia.edu/~em36/wpdos/WPSymbolConv.bas.
This was prepared by Edward Mendelson.
Otherwise, look at the macro from http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=212396
Use these on _copies_!

Microsoft has messed around with its filters for security reasons and this
has caused a few issues. Whether this particular one is caused by this
change I don't know, but if you still have the Word 2000 disc lying around
you could extract the WP converter from it and replace the updated one. No
guarantees but the old converter is also linked from the downloads page of
my web site.
