When i open up a doc that is used by someone else it
says "This file is locked for editing by User".
Unfortunately the persons name who is using the file is
not displayed. How can I make it so that if someone
already has a doc open their name will be displayed
instead of the word User in that message.

You can make everyone put their real names in the Word menu: Tools | Options | User Information. Someone apparently has "User" as their username in this menu. This username is what is supposed to be picked up in the pop-up message that you see.

Thanks for that. One problem remains though. There are a
couple of old docs that still show the name as User even
though we have now changed the info.

So even though my name is now correct under the User
Information menu, when I open the old doc they message
displayed still stays 'this file is locked for editing by
user'. Is there somewhere else that Word may be getting
this info from?

Not that I know of. It could be a network issue that is not allowing this information to be passed to the second person who tries to open the file.
