Hi,
My users are using WinNT with Office2k as well as WinXP
with Office XP. They always encounter this problem:
there's a common word document in a shared drive which all
of them need to open and edit. Th first person(user A) who
open that file is able to edit and save. The rest who open
the file later will only open it as read only. But when
user A finish his editing and try to save the file, the
system prompt him that the file is read only and thus
causing him unable to save the file.

Any body know what's the reason. Thanks in advance!

regards...Jeff

Don't add different questions into someone else's thread - they get lost!

Word does not allow a document to be opened for editing by more than one
user at a time.
You may be able to achieve what you require by saving the document as a
template from which users could create new copies of the file for editing.

Hi,
My motive is not to allow them to edit simultaneously.
The problem is the first person who open the file have
problem saving it. When someone opens the file as read
only, the other person(user A) who is able to edit and
save the file when clicking the 'save' button gets prompt
by the system that the file is read only.

Which means that a file orginally opened as read-write
became read-only out of a sudden.

I've been chasing a similar problem. I found these MSKB articles today that may help.

KB 328170 - File open returns Read-Only or Access Denied
KB 814112 - Files open slowly, as read only or error
KB 326549 - Cannot view or change the Read-Only attrib of folders
