Hello
I am assuming that you do not know MS Word never has been part of a MS
operating system.
Word will have to be purchased and loaded separate from your operating
system, it will come on a disk by itself or included in MS Office software.

There should be only one space between "IS. & There", NOT TWO!
If you were one tenth as knowledgeable about XP as David, then possibly you
'may' be able to contribute something constructive to this NG.
Now piss off.

Actually, two is correct. Old fashioned (and sometimes easier to read) but
correct. I believe that internet and computer use has pushed the popularity
of dropping the second space - one less space times X number of sentences
equals less bits to be transmitted or stored. The practice of using one
space has become accepted as a standard in some camps and and it has crept
into other venues besides internet and computer documents.

A one space user,

Word can be set for either.

Like Amy Gahran, Kathy Gill told me that the current typographic standard for a single space after the period is a reflection of the power of proportionally spaced fonts.

"The only reason that two spaces were used after a period during the 'typewriter' age was because original typewriters had monospaced fonts -- the extra space was needed for the eye to pick up on the beginning of a new sentence. That need is negated w/proportional space type, hence [it is] the typographic standard."

WOW! Now I know the reason why I was instructed to use two spaces after a period. (when I was learning Typewriting, around 13 yrs back)

I dropped the dbl space when I learnt how to print in proportional fonts. I didn't work it out overnight as I came from mainframe world where all printers were upper case only and 132 column. Secretaries did one's typing. Then I studied magazines and newspapers to learn about typesetting tricks.

I agree, David. The readability of the fonts we now have at our disposal is
greatly improved over those we had in the old typewriter days.

I can use a telex, I can give faxes to juniors, I can't use a typewriter (I used to try when my secretary went home, but I make too many mistakes for typing), I can use punch cards and these new fangled things called keyboards.

Now if I can just train my fingers and brain that they don't need that extra
space.:-)

You can always do a search and replace for any period
followed by two spaces and replace it with one.

It offends my sensibilities as a writer to use only one space after a
period!:-)

When I think of the hours spent typing term papers and more hours spent
retyping... Well, I'm just very grateful these days for the delete and
backspace keys.

Me too, but an English 201 teacher got real upset and was
marking my papers down a few points because I have extra
spaces. So I figured out an easy way to make WORKS 3.0
(DOS) find and fix the spaces.

I prefer the look with the extra space between sentences.

Me too!:-)

Hey, they taught us this stuff, now they are stuck with it or us or
something.

I agree, that's an easy way to change it, I've made other changes with using
that option but I'm not changing this...PERIOD!!!!

I retrained myself on spaces and switched to single but I like reading
things written with the double space. Bottom line: Do whatever's the most
comfortable. Switched from a natural keyboard to straight today. I like the
lighter touch needed for these keys but sure am having trouble with the
typos. Ugh!
