Hi.
All I've found on the Microsoft website is the viewer 97
for 2000, 95, 98, NT, etc but no xp. I have Office XP on
disk, but every time I install and run Word, it asks me
for the disk and says that it must install new
components, even after I've followed through those
directions several times -- EVERY single time I open
a .doc -- 'please insert disk'! I became so fed up that I
uninstalled and resorted to using the tiny viewers for
powerpoint, excel & word, which brings me to this post...

Thanks very much.

I don't believe the file format has changed. WordViewer97 should
open a WordXP document, unless it contains graphics created with
Word's embedded Draw program. WordViewer97 handles Draw98 fine
(Draw98 is an add-on/upgrade for Word97's Draw97).

That runs on XP too, but may not be fully up with some of the extras
added in the most recent Word. I use it as a convenient means of
viewing docs without the overhead of opening Word.

You might find that your underlying problem goes away with a new install
of Word from scratch, making sure you have installed all the optional
components you will need (use a Custom install)
