Word says my document changed; all I did was print it.

I am running Windows XP Professional with
Word 2002 (10.4030.2635)

My printer default printer is a remote printer,
on a Windows 98 Second Edition system, in case that
matters.

Whenever I print a document from Word and then exit Word
I get a popup window titled "Microsoft Word" that looks something
like:
/!\ Do you want to save the changes to myfilename.doc?
[ Yes ] [No ] [Cancel]

At first I thought that I got the message because the time appears
in the footer, but I still get the message when I remove the automatic
time insertion.

A short time ago I saw something in a newsgroup saying that
Tools | Options...
View tab
Show Smart tags
might be the cause, but the problem remained when I removed the
check mark for "Smart tags".

Any ideas?

After you print the document, look at the Undo button. Is it enabled? If so,
click the arrow beside it. If the only entry is "Update Fields," then that's
the culprit. Even if you've removed the TIME field, do you still have page
numbers or any other fields? Even if you don't have "Update fields" checked
on the Print tab of Tools | Options, Word updates fields in the header and
footer when you print.
