Word saving to wrong destination (redux)

I posted this a week ago and Graham Mayor respoded saying "It sounds as
though Word's registration has gone awry.
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/ReRegisterWord.htm". However that did
not fix the issue. I'm wondering if anyone else has any ideas?

PROBLEM:
This is so wierd. I have Word 2000 as part of Office for
Small Business. When I try to save a file I give it a
name and choose a directory, but Word saves it with the
first few words as the file name and saves it to the root
directory instead of where I choose. I tried re-
installing Office but it's still doing the same thing.
I'm running on Windows 98SE (it's an old machine). Any
ideas what to try. It's most frustrating. Sometimes I
can't even find the file at all after I save it. And this
happens every time whether I do save or save as.

Thanks,
Sheila

G'day "Sheila Hoffman" <[email protected]>,

Does every filename have a ~1 on the end?

G'day Sheila, (by gum I think that name's a beaut!)

Maybe it is a global template screwing with you - like a doc mgt
system gone nuts with no sensible defaults. Have you checked you Word
startup drawers / addins list for unusual signs?

Wouldn't a re-install have re-set all that? and/or the registry reset that
was already recommended? Seems like there's something that isn't getting
over-written. I don't know where to look for global templates etc. Sorry I'm
so lame. This doesn't seem like it should be so challenging. Thanks for
trying to help.

G'day "Sheila Hoffman" <[email protected]>,

No it wouldnt reset it. If you can load Word, find out the startup
folder name from tools > options > file locations

Browse that in your file system and move all files found there to a
temp folder somewhere

Then also check these two paths and do the same thing (names will vary
slightly based on OS and app versions):

Sys:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\Startup

Sys:\Documents and Settings\<your profile>\Application
Data\Microsoft\Word\STARTUP

Steve:

I had the root directory of D set as the file location. There's nothing in
either the Office\Startup or the Word-Sartup folders. I gather you were
suggesting I also empty those? I just tried changing the file location
directory. When I did a save it does save it to that directory BUT it won't
take a file name I give it. It always takes the first words of the doc. AND
when I try to change to another directory it always saves it to whatever is
set to the default.

Maybe I missed something in your directions but I don't think so.

G'day "Sheila Hoffman" <[email protected]>,

I am wondering whether there is a add-in causing this problem you see.
If you empty out all those directories I listed then you have ruled
that out. I would also check the advices for missing menus etc at
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/index.htm

The MVP site is quite a great resource. I've bookmarked it. Unfortunately I
couldn't find anything relevant. The issue is on my husband's machine. I
asked him this morning if he has the same issue in Excel. He doesn't. I just
thought that'd tell me if it was Office-wide or just Word. It appears to be
just Word. I also asked him if he had any other issues in Word. He informed
me that indeed he did. He can't do a search or a search/replace. He says
what happens is "I can see the outline of the dialog box in the bottom
corner of the screen as it tris to open, it rapidly progresses to the middle
of the screen growing larger, then it POPS as if it's a soap bubble and
disappears completely." I went to look. His description is accurate. MOST
ODD. Obviously something's corrupt. You said the resintall I did didn't
overwrite stuff. Would it be constructive to completely remove Word and
resinstall? Would that involve removing all of Office? I don't want to muck
up his Outlook since it's working fine.

Thanks for your continuing responses. I'm hopeful we can resolve these
issues.
Sheila

Graham: I'll check it out. But we're not having any problems opening Word or
files.

G'day "Sheila Hoffman" <[email protected]>,

This is sounding more and more like an OS problem. Re-install his
printer and video drivers before trying anything else.

I specifically said that the URL name was misleading. The information it
contains provides an assortment of fixes for external issues.

Graham...I realize you warned me it was a misleading title. I STILL didn't
find anything relevant there.

Steve...I'll see if I can resintall his video driver. He has no printers
installed except Acrobat. I say I'll try because we're in the process of
moving and I think all his software is already packed away and in storage
until we complete the move (next year!). Can you tell me WHY these drivers
may be the problem? Just curious.

Thanks both!
Sheila

The page details all the external issues that cause problems with Word. We
have eliminated the obvious - the registration issue - now we need to be a
bit more creative. Only by resetting Word to its install defaults can we
eliminate the obscure.

You need to look into add-ins, template corruption and registry errors. All
of which are covered there. The video driver and print drivers I do not
believe are affecting the issue.
