When I select save or save as in Word 2003, it defaults
to the template folder even though under
Tools/options/file locations I have selected another
folder. Is this a bug? Is there a work around?
Thanks. Bill

This suggests that the document you are trying to save is a template. If you
open a template directly, you cannot Save As a document, only as another
template (*.dot file). If the document you have opened has a .doc file
extension, it may still be a template that has been renamed. Some viruses
convert documents into templates, and some users save templates as
"documents" and then rename them, but Word still knows they're templates.

In Word 2002, 2003, you _can_ save a template as a document. I think this is
a design mistake but it is definitely intentional. Doing so strips out
AutoText.

If it defaults to the templates folder, you are saving as a template. To use
a template, you don't want to be opening the template but rather creating a
new document based on the template. You can do this by double-clicking in
Windows or by using File > New from Word.

folders see http://addbalance.com/usersguide/templates.htm.

Hmm. Didn't know that. You can also open a document as a quasi-template
using the New from Existing Document feature.
