Hi

Can anhone explain to me how the 'date' information on the Word 2000
document properties tab stores and changes the date a document was created,
modified or accessed?

A document I created two years ago says it was created in August 2004
according to the properties tab. How does this happen?

And does changing the order an icon appears in Explorer (by sorting by date
or type for example) constitute 'modification'?

I am puzzled!

Was the date created in a "date field", if so, it will automatically update
to the current one, I think.

Is the file in question a copy of the original? If so the creation and
accessed date will be the date that copy was created (not the creation
date of the original file), but the modified date won't change until it
is opened.

Hi

Yes it is a copy but the weird thing is the date copied isn't the date
recorded. it appears to be an arbitary date i.e. Aug 24 2004.

Not sure what would cause that unless your sysem date is/was off.

Also, correction/addition to my earlier reply:

The modified date won't change until it is opened and changed.

Created refers to the date where it was originally created in its
current location. If you update it or over-write, that will not change.

Modified may be the date on which it was updated by an editing
operation, or may be the date a program component was compiled, in which
case the date is taken from the file itself.

Accessed is what it sound like; except that as merely selecting a file
in explorer to see what the value is - or even having that column in
'details' view - will be an access, and set it to 'now', it is not that
much use.
