A password protected Word document I emailed has come back unprotected and
the sender said he just opened it in OpenOffice and wasn't even aware it had
been password protected. Is this likely to happen in other MS Office
applications and is there a way to prevent it?
Thanks

Password protected documents are encrypted and the password is required to
decrypt them. No way could such a document be opened without the user even
knowing it was protected. Either you didn't really have a password protected
document (perhaps it was protected for forms?) or your colleague is
mistaken.

Thanks Tony - you're exactly right and I thought protected for forms was
secure!
Very useful to know

I have password protected a document some weeks back. Now I dont remember the
password and the data I want to retrieve is important. Is there any way by
which I can get the data from it. I have tried various ways mentioned on
various blogs and sites and also have tried using some softwares but all in
vain. Please help.

If you could easily by-pass the password, there would be no point having it.
