Word not responding

what cause word to not respond?? when in word and the field codes have been
toggled, and i move around in the document, sometimes word says it is not
responding, why??

The document structure has probably been damaged. Which version of Word is this?

If you
- Ctrl+A (select all)
- Shift+ArrowLeft (deselect the last paragraph mark)
- Copy, then paste into a new document

Can you work in the new document with no problems? Or does this exhibit the same
behavior?
