Word Not Responding

I am using a new computer at work with Offiice XP Professional. After I have opened a closed several documents in Word, it begins to take a lot of time to close and the CPU usage is at 100%. I thought the only problem was with Word, but I had similar problems with Access not closing correctly yesterday. Can anyone tell me what I can do to fix this problem?

Difficult to diagnose, but do check that if you have Norton AV, that its
Office Plug-in is switched off.
