i have windows xp and office 2003. every time i use word
it locks up my computer, so i have to reboot. i've
reformatted my harddrive and reinstalled both to try and
fix the problem, but it hasn't helped. this also
happened when i was using office xp. anyone know what
the problem might be? it's really frustrating!

The problem here is almost certainly caused by an external issue - either a
corrupt normal.dot template, or a corrupt or inappropriate add-in or the
actions of the Norton AV Office Plug-in. See
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/ProbsOpeningWord.htm

Windows does not reboot from CTRL+ALT+DEL, that opens the task manager -
which will open very slowly if all the Windows resources are in use by the
locked Word. Deliberately crashing Windows can corrupt your hard drive
files - especially if yours is not formatted as NTFS - so ensure you run
chkdsk after doing so.
