Word locking up due to paginating???

I have a 56 page document in Word and it locks up everytime I try to open it.
I believe the problem is that it is paginiting because of the Table of
Contents. Is there a way to turn repaginating off? Or is there another
reason this is happening?

The document might be damaged; a damaged file can exhibit these symptoms.

Are you able to use Insert/File to bring the document into a new document?
