Word link error

I have an old Word doc that thinks it still has excel linked files. The
entire word doc is in "Formatted Text (RTF)" I did copy in data from excel
BUT they are text or a picture. I cannot update the data that came from
excel from within the word doc because it's a picture. So why does word keep
asking to update links when I open the file. Can I find & delete these links?

MS Word 2002 SP3

I tried links but it won't let me delete the list of links. I can click on
Manual and then clink on break link but it does nothing.
