Word inserting mysterious links <A[consists|exists]>

I was merging a document from another user with mine and Word inserted
mysterious text, which seems like a suggestion for synonyms - such as
"<A[consists|exists]>" next to the word "consists". These is only shown in my
Word, it does not show when other colleagues open the same document. When I
print the document, it's without this mysterious text. Also if I try to
copy/paste to another application (notepad, IE), it copies the text without
these mysteries. When I paste it to a new Word document, the mystery remains.
What is it? How can I get rid of it?
I'm using MS Office Professional 2003

It sounds like some kind of markup. It doesn't sound like quite the sort of
markup that would be added by using Track Changes and the Comment feature in
Word, so it may be the result of a third-party markup app.

Thanks Suzanne,

Interesting. It only does not make sense that Word does it with words such
as "above", "about", "their". Although he is a German user and it might be
some language app. Would this third-party app. be installed on colleagues
computer or mine? How to get rid ot these insertions easily and quickly? And
forever :) - also for next time. Easy way would be find&replace with regular
expressions (any advise on the expression?), but how to prevent it for the
future?

Is this in Word 2007 beta? I believe it has a new spelling checker feature
that queries such word pairs to make sure you've typed the one you want. If
this is an earlier version, this may be an add-in designed to do the same
thing (that is, make sure that when you type "their" you didn't really mean
"there" or "they're"). I would guess that if the markup doesn't print, then
you could hide it by hiding Hidden text and just not worry about it.
