I am creating a word form in column format.
How can I prevent the text preceeding a "field" from moving when entering
the "field" information?
i.e. how can i "lock" the movement of text either side of a field?

The text preceeding a field shouldn't be moving at all unless you have
something justified for center- or right-justification. Most people handle
this by putting the fields in tables with fixed-size cells or in frames.
What you are talking about is what Word calls an "online form." For more
about online forms including instructions on using tables or frames, follow
the links at http://addbalance.com/word/wordwebresources.htm#Forms or
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/Customization/FillinTheBlanks.htm especially Dian
Chapman's series of articles.

Hope this helps,
