Word documents not properly attaching into outlook

When i try to attach anything to an outgoing email, the file just appears in
the middle of the email, sometimes in the middle of a word. Attachments then
are not being able to be opened by others, word documents are coming up as
..dat files. I have tried using the attachment button, dragging and dropping.
Several people have looked at this and don't understand what is going on.

Change your message format from Rich Text to Plain Text or HTML. No one but
another Outlook user can read Rich Text messages.
