I use Microsoft Office Standard Edition 2003 and in certain Word documents,
when I get so far, my computer shuts down and re-starts automatically. What
could cause this?

It could be a hardware fault e.g. a duff memory chip, or a defective display
or printer driver. Start by checking the events log in Windows control panel
administrative tools > event viewer and check the error message that was
produced against Google.

Thank you Graham. Did as you suggest, but couldn't find Google in the Events
Log. All that show up are Application, Security, System and Antivirus.
Checked each of these - nothing that says Google. Any other suggestions? I
did have viruses on my computer some weeks ago and this problem started.
Re-formatted my computer last weekend and re-installed all programmes. It is
only in certain documents that Word shuts down my computer. Grateful for
your help.

Google is a web search engine - www.google.com. It won't be in the events
list. What will be in the events list is the Windows shutdown. That will
show an error message and it is this message that you should search at
google.

I think Graham was suggesting that you use Google to search for information
about the error message you received.

OK - feel a bit daft now! I don't get any error message. When typing in the
word document, my computer just shuts down and restarts on its own. I can't
find any reason why it does this in some items I'm typing. Have downloaded
AbiWord to enable me to type things safely, but would rather solve whatever
the problem is I'm having with Word.

The error message would be the one that shows up in the Event Log. You might
see http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/ProbsOpeningWord.htm for some
general troubleshooting tips (these apply to using and closing Word as well
as opening).
