Word document slow to close

I have Word 2002 on a new Dell 4600, when I try to close a
read-only document it is very slow to close. It takes
about 30 seconds for the document to close. I open a lot
of documents in BlackBoard (distance education program)
and it really slows me down. I click on the next document
and the arrow moves around the screen, but it will not
click on anything else. It freezes. I don't recall this
happening the first few days as I was getting used to
Word2002 vs. Word1997. I probably enabled/disabled
something, but I have no idea what. When I open and close
documents I have created in Word there is no problem.
This is not a BlackBoard problem as it works okay on other
computers. Getting frustrated.

I am not familiar with this application, but if it integrates into Word by
means of an add-in that worked in Word 97, but not in 2002 then you probably
need an update to the add-in.

If you are running Norton AV, uncheck its office plug-in.

There is no add-in that I am aware of. I just open Bb and
the Word document that the school has posted on Bb is
available for all the students to read. It is when I
click on the Back arrow (or try to go to another document)
that it just sits there. The arrow moves around the
screen, but it won't click on anything, you just have to
wait the 30 seconds for the document to close.
Thanks for your continuing help,
Jason

Does the Word doc open *within* the Blackboard window, or does it open
within Word itself? Sounds like within the Bb window, if you can click on a
Back arrow. If it is opening within Bb, that could create slowness, and you
would want to change your web browser to tell it *not* to open Word
documents within the browser, which might require deleting a plug-in for the
browser, or maybe just changing a setting. Look in the browser help, or ask
a newsgroup specific for your browser.

I'm extrapolating from my experience with PDF files and Adobe Reader opening
within the browser (which I hate), so others may have better advice.
