I used the method suggested by Microsoft Office Help to try and install new
fonts in Word, but the installer did not recognize the fonts saved as .zip
files as fonts. What other ways can I install these fonts?

You have to unzip the fonts files first, then install them in the Windows
Fonts folder. You can't install fonts in Word, only in Windows.

You missed the part about unzipping the files first. Quoting from
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/assistance/HA010947421033.aspx (the
online version of the same help topic),

"Many font packages you download from the Internet may be contained in
compressed .zip files to reduce file size and make downloading faster.
If you have downloaded a font that is saved in .zip format, you can
"unzip" it by double-clicking the icon for the font and following the
instructions on the screen."

I'll add that if double-clicking a zip file in Windows Explorer only
opens a dialog about choosing an application to open it with, you need
to get a zip program. You can get a limited-time demo at
www.winzip.com, or you can check Google for a permanently free
program.
