Word Count and Line Count

How does Word count number of words in a document? Do 5
characters make a word? Or does it count actual words
typed? Thanks.
 
Any run of characters between spaces is counted as a word. That means that
"a" is a word; "antidisestablishmentarianism" is a word. Hyphenated words
are counted as a single word; if you omit the hyphen, it's two words.
Paragraph marks count, too, I think.
