Word corrupts my monitor.

I have a SAPPHIRE RADEON 9000 ATLANTIS PRO video card, and
for reason every time I launch or open a document in
Microsoft Word,, my screen starts to corrupt to the point
where the desktop is unviewable. Can someone help me
troubleshoot this problem. This only happens when opening
up Word.. not Excel, or Powerpoint, just Word. I've tried
downloading Office from different discs as well..
 
Unrelated, but uncomfortably close: I noted font corruption when Word
97 was run with certain versions of ET6000 SVGA drivers. Again, Excel
and the rest of Office OK, and newer ET6000 drivers fixed it.

From that I conclude Word (in particular) plays fast and loose with
fonts/display in some way. Looks like it's bitten another ankle.
