Word change to one activity changes all document

I have a word document the business plan is a down loaded template from
microsoft. When I change a word to bold or add bullet points the whole
document changes to either all bold or all bullet points, and I do not know
how to reset this. I am at university on a course and the document was fine
at first. I have typed so much in the document that I do not want to lose
what I have done.. please can you give me advice.
 
This has not completely solved the problem the next issue is that in the
modify Style dialog box it shows the words dont allow layer punctuations
total alignment base line dont allow space etc how do I remove these
features. Oddly after re setting the document it still did it again. So I
am no further forward.

Are these Compatibility Options (Tools | Options | Compatibility)?
