Word breaks . . . . and --" across lines: how do I stop it from doing so?

blahblahbla

I frequently use a four-period ellipsis and terminal double hyphenation, as
in this (dorky) sentence:

"I don't know what to do. . . .formating in Word is causing me terrible--"

How can I prevent Word from breaking up the ellipsis onto multiple lines, or
breaking the double dash and starting the next line with the end quotes?
E.g.:

........................................"I don't know what to do. . .
..formating in Word is causing me terrible--
"

Help!

G'day "blahblahbla" <[email protected]>,

Its all done through AutoCorrect, either turn off annoying features
from Tools > AutoCorrect > AutoCorrect or simply use Ctrl+Z on the
occasions it gets in tha road.

If you have AutoFormat As You Type enabled, you should be getting three
periods converted to an ellipsis and two hyphens converted to a dash,
neither of which will break. Unspaced periods will not break, either. To
keep spaced periods together, use nonbreaking spaces (Ctrl+Shift+Space). To
keep your two hyphens from separating, make the first one a nonbreaking
hyphen (Ctrl+Shift+Hyphen).

Thanks. I don't care for Microsoft's ellipsis or unspaced periods, or the
dash. So:

For custom ellipsis (i.e., . . . .), I:

Inserted a zero-width space followed by .X.X.X. followed by zero-width
space. Colored the X's white. Put it into Auto Correct, formated text. It
works.

For custom double hyphen end quote (i.e., --") used at end of truncated
quotation, I:

Inserted a zero-width space followed by nonbreaking hyphen (x2) followed by
". Put it into Auto Correct, formated text. It works.
