I installed Office 2002 on my laptop but it's not letting me use Word as the
editor of new messages saying Word is either "busy" or "cannot be found".
How can I tell Outlook where it is?

Did you know Outlook has a built in help system?
Did you try typing editor in it to see if the help is there?

Alan: yes, I've looked for Help in Outlook, Word and the Office Assistant.
Adding 'trouble' to the search terms doesn't help either. It assumes one
can use Word as the editor. But, I can't get that far. Any way to get
Outlook to use Word? Thank you for helping me. nathan

The versions of Outlook and Word must match.

Outlook and Word have a long-standing defect where exiting them doesn't not
completely unload them from memory. Their exit routine is screwed up (and
not always by add-ons, either) which results in leaving behind a code stub
in memory. Look in Task Manager after you have exited Outlook or Word to
see if the outlook.exe or winword.exe processes are still loaded. If you
use an add-on that stalls the unload of Outlook, like the Personal Folders
Backup add-on, it will take longer for outlook.exe to get unloaded, so wait
a minute after exiting Outlook to see that its process got unloaded. If you
are using Word as the e-mail composer, or you used Word previously, also
check that the winword.exe process is not running when you believe that it
has been exited. If you find outlook.exe or winword.exe running when they
shouldn't, use Task Manager's Processes tab to kill them.

Microsoft has a huge support knowledgebase at http://support.microsoft.com.
Often you can find help there by selecting the product (to narrow the
search) and enter the error message or behavior that you want to lookup.
You can search there for help before posting since many problems are already
documented. Some examples from a simple search are:

Van: Thanks for the pointers. On another newsgroup board I checked out
today thru the web on Microsoft's website, I found some other postings on
this subject and how feeble Microsoft appears to be on solving this problem,
even if the programs do match. Microsoft wrote an article about this, but
for Outlook 2002, and all the posts said the remedy did not work.

So, I figured I would just reinstall Office 2003 since I wouldn't lose much
at this point. When I went to uninstall the program, I noticed that Office
Standard Edition 2003 was on the computer as well. It's a brand new laptop
and I didn't order it so I thought that was kind of weird. So I uninstalled
both programs, reinstalled Office XP 2003, and all is well!!

A good learning experience and I think the main thing I learned is to start
pushing Mac(this is my wife's 2nd Windows computer, I have a Powerbook for
me). This is just all kind of ridiculous and way too time consuming. And I
even know a bit about Windows from work!!

Anyway, thank you for your time. I hope someone else can benefit from this
exchange. nathan

So if the *application* permitting installing multiple versions of itself,
some old, some new, on a Mac, they are guaranteed not to interfere with each
other? Didn't think so. That is an application problem, not an OS problem.
