Word and Excel 2000 files do not open when you double-click them i
Windows Explorer, or when opening them from the Desktop or Explorer,
series of messages appear claiming that the file cannot be opened, such as
"Cannot open C:\My
"Cannot open "Documents\The
"Cannot open "Test.doc"
I tried reregistering ( winword /r, excel /r) and have had no luck
I have Norton AntiVirus NT v5.o, I don't find any office plug-in to disable

Norton hides its office plug-in in its Options > other > miscellaneous
dialog.
You were thinking along the right lines with re-registering as the
indications are that Explorer is incorrectly handling long file names.
Re-registering should have corrected it.
Check the in Windows Explorer > tools > folder options > file types against
the 'open' action for eg Word that the DDE action is

[REM _DDE_Direct][FileOpen("%1")]
ie that there are speech marks round the %1.

Hmmm. That looks OK to me. The issue remains one concerning long filenames.
If re-registering has not fixed this, I don't know what to advise.

As for Norton, there are many flavours of this product, maybe yours doesn't
have the plug-in. It's no loss :)

This is exactly what it looked like. I've coppied and pasted them
application to perform operation:
"D:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\WINWORD.EXE" /n
DDE Message: (Use DDE box checked)
[REM _DDE_Direct][FileOpen("%1")]
Application:
WinWord
DDE Application not running:
(blank)
Topic: System
Norton does not display a other > miscellaneous in the options
