Is there anyone else here who is a user of the WordToys add-in? I used
its predecessor with earlier versions of Word and was delighted when
it (re-)appeared on the scene some weeks ago. However, I've run into a
problem (which seems to be down to my own machine) with the latest
version (v.1.0.10) and would like to step back to either v.1.0.8 which
I know worked perfectly for me or v.1.0.9 which I'd like to try.
However, I foolishly allowed the download of the newest version to
wipe my download of 1.0.8 and so haven't got it any more.

I've looked on various web-sites and tried those that offer these two
versions, only to find that what is really there (despite the
headings!) is the latest version. Would anyone here who is a user of
the program and still has version 8 or 9 be willing to e-mail me the
zip-file?

Thanks in advance.

What problem are you encountering and what version of Word are you
using?

We might be able to rectify the problem or offer a workaround if you
can't find an earlier version.

Thanks, Beth. I'm using Office 2002 and the version of Word is
10.4524.4219 SP2, running under Windows XP SP2.

I had no problems with WordToys versions 1.0 to 1.0.8 (I never
installed 1.0.9, so can't comment on that). When I installed version
1.0.10 a single problem arose -- otherwise everything is still fine.

The problem affects "Document Recall". At first, when I left-clicked
this I got the "Recent Documents" and "Last Used" headings with the
double underline beneath, then "Options" and then "Browse History",
but with no recent documents actually listed. If I hovered the pointer
over "Options", it killed WordToys completely. "Browse History" worked
fine, bringing up the "Recent" folder, from which I could open
documents.

On advice, I did a Repair to Word and also replaced the file
shell32.dll in the System32 folder, to be sure this was not corrupted
in some way. What I have now is as above but without "Options" being
shewn. And it does now seem to be stable, but without that tab and
without the files listing display. If I uninstall and go back to
v.1.0.55 (which I did keep), everything is fine and behaves just as it
should. And when I installed version 1.0.10 on my Vaio laptop (XP SP2
and the same Office installation), it worked absolutely fine. So
whatever the problem is, it seems to be on my machine. Up-to-date AVG
anti-virus tell me the machine is clean.

I think that's about it ....

I downloaded version 1.0.10 a week or so ago for another issue and I
don't see the "Options" command you are referring to in the Document
Recall menu.

If you aren't seeing recent documents listed then did you use
something like Tweak UI to suppress your document history? If you have
Tweak UI then check the Explorer settings and see if "Maintain
Document History" is turned on.

That is indeed turned on.

Then I'm not sure what to suggest. Perhaps someone else will have
another suggestion or will be able to send you the download. Sorry!

Thanks for trying! I've now tried re-installing Office and making sure
that I've got all the most recent updates.

However, I've come across something that might be the explanation, and
I wonder if you or anyone else can help. If I go into File and then
Open and then choose History, the display of Recent comes up, just as
it does by doing the same in Excel or Access. But in both of those
programs (a) the view can be changed to shew large icons, small icons,
list etc, and (b) it's possible to limit the range of files shewn. In
Word however only the list view is possible -- all the other options
just shew a blank space -- and the only way of displaying the list is
All Files -- all the other options shew a blank space. Can anyone
suggest why the Open operation works so differently in Word from in
the other two Office programs and (more importantly) how to get it
working as it ought?

From what I can gather it doesn't use the Recent folder for the
Document Recall list. (This could be one of the changes in the version
you are using)

My Recent folder is purged and yet I have documents in the Document
Recall list. I'm still trying to figure out where it is gathering this
information, not the Registry and I've cleared all document lists in
Windows. If I find anything I'll post back to this thread.

Regarding the view of the dialog box, I suspect this is an issue in
the add-in since he is using the Open dialog box when you click the
History command. The programmer has the option of setting various
flags and such which modifies the behavior of the dialog box.

If you do not encounter the same issues in the regular File/Open
dialog box then there is little you can do about it aside from using
an earlier version or wait for the next one.
