word 97 says document is currently being used

Word 97, winXP, when I double click on a document to open
it word opens, then opens the document, then pops up a
message saying "C:\..\docments\<filename.doc> is being
used by <the current user looged on>. Do you want to make
a copy?"
If I click OK, I get an error message saying that the
document could not be opened.
If I click cancel, I can work on the document and save
it, or save it as another filename.
However, if I open WORD first, I can open any document
via FILE / OPEN without error.
* Same error with all documents.
* None of the files are 'read-only'
* Same error with all users.

Any suggestions?
