We have a Word 97 template that has a macro that merges a file when th
template is opened. This works fine if I click on the template. It als
works fine if I specify the file from a DOS command prompt.
However, if I use a 3rd party piece of software to connect to the P
and open the template, the template opens fine, but the merge macr
does not appear to get executed, and the data is not merged.

Is there some restriction on macros being executed if the main documen
is opened in 'batch' mode

Hi Steve,

works fine if I specify the file from a DOS command prompt.

does not appear to get executed, and the data is not merged.
Relevant would be
- how is the macro named
- is the template actually being opened in all three scenarios, or is
it generating a new document in some of them

Cindy,
Thanks for the reply.

The macro is called autonew.
In all cases, when the template opens it opens as the template.

It seems to us that the macro is somehow 'turned off' when the template
is being opened from a remote (batch type) source - is that likely?

If the template is being *opened* as a file, then AutoNew won't
trigger; AutoOpen would.

However, if you are using a template, then you shouldn't be opening
the file, but creating a new document from it (and in this case
AutoNew will fire).

to boil it down: this third-party software you're using isn't doing
what you need to have it do.
