Word 2k insists on saving global template

Subject line says it all. I've been through all "Styles" and removed
"Automatic Update" from them all (suggestion of Suzanne S. Barnhill).
Still does it.

I deleted normal.dot and replaced it with normal.dot from another PC that
doesn't have the annoyance. Still does it.

If I "New" with a different template, it still does it. I deleted
normal.dot altogether. Still does it.

Any ideas?

I guess you would have done this already but..
Check Tools>Options>Save>Prompt to Save Normal Template is unchecked.

Don't give up. *Something* is changing the template. If it's not the
template itself (which your tests suggest it isn't), then it's either an
add-in, a corruption of winword.exe, or a virus.

Start with add-ins: find the Word start-up folder (check Tools > Options >
File locations). Any .dot file in this folder gets loaded automatically when
Word starts, and macros therein will run. So move any such files to another
location and re-start Word. If the problem is now gone ... you've found it.

Failing that, try reinstalling Word.

Failing that ... don't know.

Well, if you delete normal.dot, it will be recreated the next time you
start Word; and you will be prompted to save the newly created copy
when you exit the application. If you accept that initial save, does
the problem still persist?

The most usual cause of this is an unruly add-in. The two most common
culprits are the Norton Office Plug-in and the Microsoft Works Suite Add-in
for Word.

Please don't clear this check box. It's equivalent to taking the batteries
out of your smoke detector. You need to find out what is making changes to
Normal.dot; clearing that box does not stop the changes from being made: it
just stops Word from asking your permission to save them.

Thanks ALL (Suzanne et al)

Add-ins hadn't occurred to me. Shall chase some goannas up those trees.

Thanks
