Word 2007

When I save a Word 2007 as a Word 97-2003 file, then send it out as an e-mail
attachment, the recipient cannot open the file.

What can I do to prevent this from happening?

Does this happen all the time or just with specific files? If the recipient
sends the file back to you, can you then read it?
