Word 2007 cannot be opened by e-mail recipient

Good guy in MD

When I save a Word 2007 as a Word 97-2003 file, then send it out as an e-mail
attachment, the recipient cannot open the file.

What can I do to prevent this from happening?
 
Have you tried re-sending the file or saving it in a different format (such
as RFT)?
