Word 2004 Student Edition Spell Check

I have Office 2004 Student version for the Mac and the spell checker option
in preferences is grayed out. I do I get it up and working?

I think generating a fresh prefs file fixes this--see the troubleshooting
tips here:
http://word.mvps.org/MacWordNew/TroubleshootingIndex.htm
(hit refresh a few times in Safari, or use a different browser)

Please also note that questions about Word misbehaving, not just how to
manipulate it internally, would be better directed to Mac-specific groups
for Mac versions.
