How do I close the portion to the right of the screen that says "Getting Started" so that it does not keep opening w/each new document? How do I get it back?

Disable it on the View tab of Tools | Options (Startup Task Pane). If that
doesn't "take," see
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/Customization/ShowTaskPane.htm. To get it back,
select it from the list when you have any other task pane open (click the
arrow at the top of the task pane to get a list of available task panes).

You need the taskpane controller. See
http://word.mvps.org/faqs/customization/ShowTaskPane.htm
