Word 2003 - XP Home - delete not delete - files come back

I have this weird problem. I delete Word files in Explorer and they come
back!

I don't, by the way, empty protected files or otherwise do anything re
deleted files - I just delete them and they just come back.

When I delete files on the desktop, they come back, but they always have,
and I have to use an erase program to get rid of those.

Solutions/advice?

Files saved and deleted should delete to the Wastebasket INCLUDING files
saved to the Desktop (a very bad practise anyway). So there has always been
something wrong with your computer. When you delete a file, is it sent to
the Wastebasket?

It is sent to the Wastebasket.

Are you saying saving and deleting on the Desktop is a bad thing? If so,
please explain why

The Desktop isn't a safe location for anything other than shortcuts because
of its fragility: desktop crashes are a common occurrence.

When you delete a document, it goes to the wastebasket. When does it 'come
back' and is it still in the wastebasket? It sounds to me as though
something must be triggering the Restore function in the wastebasket. This
smacks of a virus or malware on your computer.

Terry

I'm up to me eyes with virus (my PC is totally stealthed) and mal and adware
protection programs, none of which show anything.

I am considering 'repairing' Word, but instinctively, I hesitate, in case
this brings more problems down on my head. I could just reinstall Office
2003.

Bearing in mind, I have XP Home, I would appreciate your comments on these
last two ideas.

Reinstalling rarely fixes problems because most are caused by third party
add-ins or incompatible macros and templates (Norton being on of the biggest
offenders). Running the Repair function will fix the problem IF it is Word
that is at fault. However, from your description it still seems that
something is triggering the Restore function in the Wastebasket.

In case you read this...........

After a few days of careful observation, it appears this problem might be
related to XP's System Restore - while it was on, problem, while it was off,
no problem. Does that make any sense or is it just stupid?

Well, System Restore would certainly revert you back to a previous version
or undelete a deleted file. But I have not heard of it happening and I would
suggest you try one of the Win XP newsgroups to see if they have seen the
problem. A most unusual fault and thanks for the update.

Thanks,

But I have not in fact used System Restore, but simply turned it off.

Now (with SR still turned off), files are coming back again - some after
being deleted in usual way only an hour or so before, more after a longer
period.

Please remind me: are you a lone user on a single computer, or is this
across a network to a server?
