word 2003 update closes abnormally when no documents are present

Word 2003 SP2

1. Several documents are opened and edited
2. All documents are closed but Word is still on desktop
3. Word is minimised in desktop
4. Then when maximised Word exits without saving changes to normal.dot and
the last six files opened.
5. When word reloaded changes in the last session is not there.
