I have a two-column table and I am typing text in the righthand column.
Unfortunately, the text is going slap bang up against the right border of the
table - and, in fact, some letters are getting chopped off. Surely there
should be some sort of "space clearance" as you type. How can I correct this?

You are in a table set for exact spacing. You can set it to adjust column
size for content or to expand cells for content. Generally tables like this
are created when the author wants to limit what can be typed or to preserve
formatting even if that limits what can be typed.

Check to make sure that the paragraph doesn't have a negative right indent.
Also, check Table Properties and see what the cell margins are set to.
