Word 2003 - Show XML tags

I know I can turn this off and on using ctrl+shift+X but my users would like
it turned off by default. Does anyone know of a way to do this?

Have you linked any kind of transform to these XML files? How are they being
used?

I don't know of any way to change the default, if no transform is associated
with the file and its schema. But certainly an AutoOpen macro could toggle the
view.
