I have tried for hours to get rid of tracked changes in an old document and
nothing works. Has anyone been able to do this. I've tried all the
recommendations in the Help Section - nothing works.

Display the Reviewing toolbar. Click the arrow next to Accept Change and
choose Accept All Changes in Document. If this does not remove the changes,
use the Next button to go to the next change. You may get a message that
"The document contains no comments or tracked changes." If so, then the
"markup" has been done manually (or by a third-party app such as DeltaView)
rather than using Word's Track Changes feature, and accepting/rejecting
changes will be much more difficult.

I received the message "The document contains no comments or tracked
changes." - You note that this is more difficult to get rid of tracked
changes - but you don't advise how to get rid of them. If it's possible to
do - how do I do it?

Assuming you don't have the third-party app that created them (which may
provide some way of "accepting" them), you'll have to use Find and Replace
to manually search for the formatting used for deletions and remove text so
formatted, then search for the formatting used for insertions and remove the
formatting.
