Word 2003 application closes automatically when last document is .

When I close the last open document in Word 2003, the entire application
closes automatically. This requires reopening of the entire application each
time I want to work in another document.

How do I prevent this from happening?

That's exactly the same thing that happens to me all the time. It seems
like it should be an easy one to figure out. Any ideas?
