Word 2002 Mail Merge

I posted earlier but was not specific enough. If you do
not have the Access program, can you still create a data
source file in Word and save it the Access format, which
is the default foramt in Word? And can you still merge
your main document with the data source? Can Word somehow
simulate an Access file when creating a data source for
purposes of merging in Word without having the Access
program? Sorry this is so lengthy. Difficult for me to
expalin.

It is not necessary to have Access to use Mail Merge in Word.
