I downloaded a red labled "update first" WindowsXP patch
on 9 August. My computer shut down after the upgrade and
trys to start then shuts down, tries to start then shuts
down. It gave me a "safe mode with internet support"
once but couldn't go into safe mode. I tried to boot
from a WindowsXP CD from another computer but it won't
boot and continues the shutdown and restart, shutdown and
restart mode. The computer is a Compaq 1700 laptop that
has worked flawlessly until the Microsoft Update
download. What to do now?

I had a similar problem after the Aug 9 download patches.
One solution is to go to use the "restore to a previous
working version" (or something like that) feature in
XP and restore to Aug 8 (or earlier). Help on that can
be found in XP and also support.microsoft.com webpage.
