Won't shut down

After several attempts to shut down using the standard methods (start button,
ctl alt del), I resorted to using the on/off button on the cpu and still no
shut down! I literally had to pull the plug to reach a power off state. Short
of demonic possession, I am at a total loss as to what may have caused this
problem.

There's good information on shutdown problems here:
http://www.aumha.org/win5/a/shtdwnxp.htm

Also (if this is your problem) read "It is Now Safe to Turn Off Your
Computer" Error Message When You Try to Shut Down Your Computer" at
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=810903

Finally, note that you should never have to pull the plug. Your computer has
a power on/off switch and it presumably works. What you may not realize is
that you have to hold the button in for 4-5 seconds to power off.

The button needs to typically held in for 4 seconds if set properly to
avoid accidentally powering of the unit. Press and hold for a 5 count
and it should power off. The "shutdown" issue is addressed by Frank S.
posting.

Thanks for the quick posts. I am aware of the 5 sec hold, as I have used this
on numerous occasions on this and other pc's i have owned, as a last result
of course; which is why I was perplexed when it didn't work this time.

I have yet to explore Frank & Ken's posts yet....I am off to do that right
now. I will post my results.

Once again, much gratitude for your speedy replies.

Hold the button down for 5 seconds.

The office computer I'm using at this very moment (I should be working,
but what the heck) is a dinosaur (relatively speaking, from a hardware
perspective), running Win2K. On a couple of occasions I found the
computer non-responsive, even to the point of ignoring my attempts to
power down using the power switch (yes, for more than a few seconds).
Interestingly, after pulling the plug, the light on the computer
remains on for several seconds! I take this to be a hardware issue.
Perhaps your problem is similar.

I can do you one better: My computer will shut down when I hold the power
button, but it will power itself up after a few minutes!! This started when i
upgraded to XP. My computer is in a room just outside my bedroom. when it
first happened it was like being in a bad science fiction movie.
