So I had a problem with this pc giving constant yet vauge "Windows has
recovered from a critical error" messages. I tried to reload program
files by booting to the cd and after the initial deleting then copying
of system files it goes thru its normal task of rebooting. However,
after giving the XP screen with the scrolling bar along the bottom it
stops and reboots. I enabled the feature to get it to stop
automatically rebooting and it gives a 0x7E stop error. Microsoft gives
this guide to find solutions:

In order, there is 40GB of free space, and HP has no way to flash the
bios outside of windows available on their website. I do think that it
is a driver problem though, since I can get into Safe Mode. However,
there is a twist. I try to log in via safe mode and it tells me that XP
must be activated before i can log in, then tells me that i have to do
it in regular mode. That's awesome how you have to reactivate after
loading proggies.

Is there a way to set windows to do a clean boot from the recovery
console? I can hook this hdd up to another pc to rename all the
drivers, which is probably what i'm going to do next but if there was a
quicker way I'd prefer that.

Thanks in advance.

You can disable services and drivers from within the recovery console using
the disable command.

Here's another reference for that error message.

Thanks for the info. I found out through your links that it was the
intelppm.sys driver.
