Maybe a non microsoft lover be kind enough to answer , whether i could
get rid of Windows media Player version 9 , out of my xp-home system
altogether .. and how to do it .

u see i made a mistake of upgrading to version useless 9 ....

thanks ..

That would revert to WMP 8 (aka WMP for XP). You can not fully "remove" WMP
from the system as it is part of the OS. Uninstall XP SP2 is released that
cmd will do nothing.

...but understand that WMP 9 is deeply embedded in the OS and removing
this way may cause irreparable damage...
I've also seen it suggested that doing a system restore back to a time
before WMP9 was installed, but that seems like it would cause more problems
than it would solve. Again, I think caution is advised here.

Maybe I should type that so it makes sense.

"After XP SP2 is released that cmd will do nothing" <-XP SP2 includes WMP 9.
So if the command did work to get rid of WMP 9, it would also remove SP2
from the system too.

You have been given some advice on why you cannot remove Windows Media
Player. Windows Media Player is just files using some space on your hard
drive. You can configure Media Player not to open for any media files. If
you do so, you do loose some hard drive space. However your computer will
not known Media Player exists. Open Media Player and go to Tools, Options
and File Type tab. Clear all of the check boxes for file types.

Thanks to all answered to my post .

I have just read above , but before applying i will learn more about
it ..

Here is what i did so far -unsuccesfully -

run remove programs from xp .. . manually gone to directory and
deleted all files and directories ... which left following 7
files ( in date order as they appear in my pc.)

dlimport.exe 288KB 8/2002
npdsplay.dll 356KB ,,
setup_vm.exe 216KB ,,
wmpvis.dll 508KB ,,

npdrmv2.dll 213KB 11/2002
npwmsdrm.dll 10KB ,,

mplayer2.exe 5KB 6/2004 * (date of attempt to delete)

First 4 files came with the original xp cd. Next 2 must be updates
or whatever. Last one assigns itself a new date each time you
attempt to delete it. None of the above is deletable.

I have 2 partitions in my pc - win98/fat32 and xphome/ntfs

Any file utility program running via partition one will not reach the
other partition. So thats out .. Running command prompt and dos
programs within xp dont work either..

As i had no problem with wmp8 ( even though it is a perfect spyware )
logical approach would be restore to a date earlier than update to
wmp 9. I wish i knew or made a record of it .. However will try it .
That will bring further unnecessary work as i will need to install all
the other settings since that date. It is possible microsoft might
have buggered that up too, as it was updating to wmp 9 !!!!

But still believe there has to be a way via registry or similar as
above link in zdnet... will pursue this ..

My point is that i bought my xp with wmp 8 .. Microsoft forced me to
change it to a an inferior version. Maybe due to the courtcase....

Now i cant enjoy the facilities i had with wmp8 . I believe i have a
case against microsoft as an ordinary consumer .. I am not an expert
at all on computers or programs to fiddle my way through all this
hassle. Although i am a user of pcs since the days of DOS 3, and
easywriter, or supercalc & lotus and NC/NDD . Life was less
complicated then..

Now i have to buy a new microsoft product as the older ones are
buggered up by endless updates, and so called security patches which
seems to get more and more as a new product launch becomes nearer..

What "inferior" about WMP 9? WMP 9 added features, what did Microsoft take
away that you can not live without?

Why can't you just disable access to the program?? That's what Program
Access and defaults is for, correct? I just really never understand people
like you. Microsoft may be "forcing" you to have WMP on the system, but in
no way are "they" forcing you to use it!

By trying to delete things manual you have likely screwed over your PC.
When you go to install SP2, WMP9 is going to be looking around for
everything you are trying to delete!

As for the spyware claim, please contact the FTC and ask them about WMP.

Just use another media player - i don't think WM9 phones home if you
don't use it.

They remove functionality(for instance, can't press "m" for mute, can't
search while viewing the picture like i old versions, etc) and add a lot
of bloat for their sake not ours. It forces you to check for updates you
can't disable it!

Yeah right. Do you believe in the tooth fairy as well?

Oh yes, and it wastes space for this - which XP does in abundance
already.

Run Ad-aware and Spybot S&D, and it will find Reg Keys for WMP it
"classifies" as spyware...don't know why it "Flags" these for "No"
reason...is it a "False Positive"? Any input would be
appreciated...Thanks...

I personally DO use WMP9. I also uncheck the items I don't want it to be
used for. I was NOT trying to sound negative when I asked the "damn" reg
keys question...But, thanks for the "damn" input. Have a nice day, "Darn"
it.

ask the makers of the programs. i think you will be supprised when you
find out what the keys are and the fact that they never get used unless you
have the damn option checked.

i did it on wmp 8 .. in fact that was the first thing i did when i
installed xp-home..

telling microsoft what dvd s i watch and mp3 i play is not considered
spying then ? Anyway pointless this .. it spies on yr activities
, like many more ms programs on xp .. One should be knowledgable
enough to disable all these services .. Well ordinary foolks dont ,
cant do it .. XP was supposed to bring hassle free enjoyment to
ordinary computer users .. Did it ? One look at this and many
discussions groups show that it didnt .. So i suggest you stop
saying phrases like " people like you " .... I am the people who
uses this product , and i am helpless even to protect the goods
which i bought from the shelf in their condition as i bought because
microsoft comes in and buggers it up .. Correct ?

Of course it is . Day by day you are signing the death of this
company .. You are, in my understanding of trade and consumer laws
are CHEATS, .....and dishonest .. Stop using these groups to insult
yr customers and try to behave in a responsible manner.

All versions of WMP have used third party DVD decoders. That's not going to
change and is nothing new to WMP 9. They also did not "take it out" of WMP
8. reinstall your DVD decoder and play a DVD.

You should be able to go in to the add remove programs and select add remove windows components. When you select on Windows Media Player, this should disable and possibly remove it.

Dear Own
Just a couple quick questions come to mind after reading your posts among the many on this subject
1. Do you always speak to and treat those seeking help in this uncouth manner or only when safely hidden on line
2. Do you kick sleeping dogs
3. Are you abussive toward old people and little children
4. Or is it that your parents don't monitor your actions while they are letting the computer be your babysitter?
