WMP-9 Question

I've been using Windows Media Player 9 (WMP-9) since purchasing
this (WindowsXP) system seven months ago ... primarily to play
video clips (*.mpg, *.wmv, etc.). I like the features,
although it does occasionally crash (freeze).

Until a recent crash, when a video clip was playing, the total
length (time duration) of the clip displayed in the bottom right
corner of the player window ... immediately above the clip time
duration counter. Now this does *NOT* display; although I think
I've experimented with all the menu "view" options, I have been
unable to get the "total time duration of clip" display to return.
Everything else seems to work fine. While this is not a catastrophic
failure, it *is* IRRITATING (since I often found the total clip
time useful as a "quick look" parameter.

Guys, most likely there *is* a toggle (somewhere) to turn the
missing feature on-and-off; however, if so, I haven't been
able to find the doggone thing. Arghhh!!!

If no such toggle exists, then perhaps one of the WMP files got
corrupted in the crash. If that is the case, perhaps a fresh
download of WMP-9 would overwrite/restore the file(s)? Or is
it necessary to first *uninstall* WMP-9 and then download and
do a fresh install?

Any help that anyone can provide will be much appreciated. Many
of you can probably appreciate the feeling of frustration when
facing a (seemingly) intransigent computing anomaly (even it's a
non-catastrophic one).

Regards,

Ted Rodrick

First, thank you for the info and the links. I will spend some
time exploring them thoroughly.

I did follow your instructions, and RE-INSTALLED WMP-9. The process
completed, and the result is a functional player; however, it did
*NOT* solve the issue that I referenced in my original message. To
wit, when playing a video clip (e.g. a *.mpeg file), I still do *NOT*
see the "total clip time duration" displayed in the lower righthand
corner of the player window. It used to display immediately above
the "runtime" counter (which does still display), but ... alas ...
the "total clip time" display is NOT there. <Sigh>

FWIW, at the end of the WMP-9 installation process, after the
player opens to display a variety of content-related links, a
dialog box appeared with the message "Script Error" with YES/NO
option buttons. No matter which of those choices I clicked (I
went through the re-installation process twice ... once for each
choice), the "total clip time" does NOT display when playing a
video clip. I don't know whether this "Script Error" phenomenom
is relevant to the missing "total clip runtime" display or not. :-)

Thanks again for the response,

Ted Rodrick

Eureka!!! That did it. Thank you so much. I know that I
previously tried that option, but I think my mistake was
that I gave up on it too soon; the "total clip time" did
not appear until the clip had completely cycled (i.e. on
its second play cycle). I suspect that when I previously
experimented with selecting that option I probable was
playing a long clip ... and gave up on it before the clip
completely cycled. Arghhh!!! I figured that it would turn
out to be something simple. Of course, most solutions are
simple once success is achieved, right?

In any case, thanks again; that darn issue ... however
minor ... was driving me CRAZY.

Hi Ted,

You're welcome :-)
Yes, seemingly minor issues are very irritating sometimes.
